Receiving Access
This guide explains what happens when you're designated as a survivor and a will transfer is triggered.
Overview
As a survivor, you'll receive notification when:
- The host has been unresponsive to liveness checks (automated), OR
- Another survivor initiated the transfer manually
Notification
How You'll Be Notified
You'll receive a message through one of your contact methods (in priority order):
- SMS
- Telegram
Notification Content
The notification will say something like:
Burning Ash Protocol Notification
The will transfer process has been initiated for [Host Name].
The host has not responded to liveness checks (or transfer was manually initiated).
To verify your identity and participate in accessing the will, visit: [portal link]
After Notification
Once notified:
- Don't panic — the host may still cancel
- You can verify your identity and authenticate
- Once threshold is met, you'll get access to documents
- You can also wait to see if other survivors authenticate first

Finding the Portal
The notification includes a link to the Survivor Portal:

What You'll See
When you first access the portal, you'll see:

Selecting Your Name
- Find your name in the list
- Click on it / check the box
- Click "Continue"
Note: Only your name is shown — you won't see other survivors' contact details.
Authentication Process
After selecting your name, you'll need to verify your identity.
OTP Verification
- System sends a 6-digit OTP to your primary contact method
- Enter the code within 10 minutes
- You have 3 attempts per OTP
OTP Delivery
The system tries your connectors in order:
Primary → Secondary → Tertiary → Quaternary
If primary fails, it automatically tries the next.

Backup Codes
If you can't receive OTP (lost phone, no email access), use a backup code:
- Click "Use Backup Code"
- Enter your 8-character code:
A3F7-K9M2 - Click "Submit"
Each backup code is single-use.

Waiting for Threshold
If more survivors are needed:
- You can leave and return later
- The portal shows current progress
- You'll be notified when threshold is met
Accessing Documents
When threshold is met, you can access the documents.

Download Options
- Download All as ZIP — All documents in one archive
- View Individual — Open each document in-browser
Document Verification
Each document shows ✅ or ⚠️:
- ✅ — Hash verified, document intact
- ⚠️ — Hash mismatch, document may have been modified
Access Window
Once threshold is met, you have 7 days (default) to access documents.
After the window expires:
- Documents are re-sealed
- Will may return to active (if host revived)
- New transfer would need to be initiated
Troubleshooting
Not Receiving OTP
- Check all channels — email, SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram
- Check spam/junk — email may be filtered
- Resend — Click "Resend Code"
- Use backup code — If available
Backup Codes Not Working
- Verify you're entering correctly (format: A3F7-K9M2)
- Each code can only be used once
- Contact host if all codes used and no OTP delivery
Can't Access Portal
- Verify link from notification
- Check URL is complete
- Contact other survivors
"Already Authenticated"
If you see this message:
- You've already verified in this transfer
- You can't re-verify (backup codes already used, etc.)
- Wait for threshold to be met
What Not to Do
- Don't spam OTP requests — Rate limited (max 5/hour)
- Don't share portal link — It's unique to you
- Don't guess OTP codes — 3 attempts then locked out
- Don't wait too long — Access window is limited

As a survivor, your experience is:
- Receive notification — via email/SMS/WhatsApp/Telegram
- Visit portal — select your name

- Access documents — when K survivors verified
The process is designed to be simple — no accounts to create, no apps to install, just verify identity and access.
